It was a Friday afternoon whenwe took a trip to the pet shop. We'd been nagging our dad for months now to get hold of a pet, but these days all dad did was sit on his computer whilst browsing on his new adult dating service. But suddenly, quite out of the blue, after spending several hours doing nothing but adult dating, dad decided that he would give in to us. We were shocked! We had barely nagged him at all that day!
Anywhere, we packed in to the car like sardines, all of us squabbling over what we were going to buy. George liked the idea of a dog, Amanda wanted a kitten, our youngest brother Darius said that a stick insect would be the best thing for us. I said nothing while the others bickered amongst themselves.
When we reached the pet shop there were hundreds of creatures to choose from: hamsters, guinea pigs, cats and dogs and parrots. The four of us gasped at all the wonderful animals. Darius went to fetch dad.
Dad was still grumbling about the fact that he was missing hours of free adult dating by the time he entered the shop. He swirled past the myriad of cages as if they didn't exist. Nothing seemed to catch his attention, he was in such a bad mood. Then, upon reaching the end of the shop, something did catch his eye.
The lovable turnip peered up at dad with big, watery eyes. From that moment on ourdad had decided exactlywhat pet we were getting. Our entire family had fallen in love with the little root vegetable.
The turnip, which we decided to name Roger, enjoyed the ride in the car home. He had two little roots for arms and a number of root legs. He had wrinkly skin, a long nose and hair that sprouted in all directions like a fuzzy green mop. We quickly discovered that if you tickled his stomach in the right place, he would squeal with delight, quite unlike the average carrot or potato. He was certainly a remarkable vegetable, and a good friend to us all.
Anyway, time moves on. Even to this day, which was five years ago, I remember with tears in my eyes the time we first met Roger. He still lives with us, that adorable little cousin to the carrot, andI have to tell you thatand dads adult dating service has recently expired.
